Born in Helensville New Zealand , Cherry grew up residing on the family sheep and cattle farming property. At age 20 she traveled to Sydney Australia where she was accepted at the Sydney Institute of Technology (1981) and completed the first 2 years of the clothing design course offered there.
While still a student at Sydney Fashion Institute she began selling her designs at Paddington market.
